THIS IS NOT A MUSEUM / THIS IS NOT A CATALOGUE is a highly subjective visual and narrative exploration of the Maastricht University’s art collection. THIS IS NOT A MUSEUM / THIS IS NOT A CATALOGUE reimagines the collection as a dynamic, living entity and creates new narratives through the interplay of visual culture, juxtaposing the artworks with cinematic imagery and book titles.

Featuring 77 artworks from over 40 years of commissions, acquisitions, and site-specific installations, the book frames them in dialogue with approx. 1,000 movie stills—from films spanning 1902 to 2024—and 65 paperback titles, primarily horror and science fiction from the 60s–80s. These elements serve as storytelling devices, playfully yet critically reframing the artworks. Popular culture is not just imagery but a lens through which the collection’s broader social and historical context is examined. This interplay transforms the collection into a living, reconfigurable entity. The deliberate juxtaposition of these elements challenges readers to form their own associations, inviting reinterpretation and fresh perspectives.

THIS IS NOT A MUSEUM / THIS IS NOT A CATALOGUE embodies a methodology of disassembly and reassembly. The design allows the collection to be seen as a fluid and evolving “pool” of connections, interpretations, and stories, resulting in a multilayered, immersive book that invites readers into a dialogue between art, popular culture, and personal imagination.
